How Much Does a Tune-Up Cost in Miami? What Is Included and What Drives the Price
"How much is a tune-up?" is one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is that a tune-up is no longer a single fixed service. On a 1990s car it meant plugs, wires, cap, rotor and a carburetor adjustment. On a 2020 BMW it might mean spark plugs, ignition coils, a walnut blast of the intake valves and a software update. The price follows the work, so this guide explains what is actually included and the five things that move the number up or down.
What a modern tune-up includes
At DS Proformance a tune-up starts with a scan of stored and pending fault codes and a look at live engine data, because a rough idle can come from a vacuum leak or a weak coil just as easily as from old plugs. From there, the core of the job is:
- Spark plugs of the correct heat range and gap for your engine
- Ignition coils if testing shows they are weak or the car has a history of misfires
- Engine air filter and cabin air filter
- Throttle body cleaning and an idle relearn
- Fuel system cleaning or injector service
- Inspection of belts, hoses, the PCV system and vacuum lines
- A road test and a final scan to confirm everything is correct
If the car does not need one of these items, we leave it out and tell you why. A tune-up should fix a problem or prevent one, not pad an invoice.
The five things that change the price
1. Number of cylinders and where the plugs are
A four-cylinder with plugs on top of the engine is a quick job. A V6 or V8 with plugs under the intake manifold, or a flat-six Porsche where the plugs are reached from underneath, takes several times longer. Labor is usually the biggest part of the bill, so engine layout matters more than the brand name.
2. Plugs and coils: standard or premium
Iridium and platinum plugs cost more than copper but last three to four times longer, and most modern engines require them. Coils are the real variable. On many European engines coils and plugs wear together and replacing only the plugs means coming back in six months.
3. Direct injection and carbon buildup
Nearly every European engine built in the last fifteen years is direct-injected. Fuel never washes the intake valves, so carbon builds up and causes a rough cold idle and misfires that new plugs alone will not cure. Walnut blasting the intake valves fixes it properly and is a separate line item from a basic tune-up. It is also the single most effective service for restoring lost power on these engines.
4. What the diagnostic turns up
Sometimes the "tune-up" a car needs is really one failed coil, a cracked intake boot or a dirty mass airflow sensor. Fixing that one item costs far less than a full tune-up, and it is why we diagnose before we quote. The opposite is also true: a car that has never had plugs in 100,000 miles may need more than the basics.
5. Turbocharged and tuned engines
Turbo engines run higher cylinder pressures and need plugs more often, sometimes every 30,000 miles instead of 60,000 to 100,000. Tuned cars often need a colder plug and a shorter interval. Those plugs cost a little more and the interval is shorter, but skipping them leads to misfires under boost and, eventually, damage.
Signs you are due
- Rough or uneven idle, especially when cold
- Hesitation or stumbling when you accelerate
- Hard starting or longer cranking
- A check engine light with a misfire code (P0300 to P0308)
- Worse fuel economy with no change in driving
- Plugs that have never been replaced, or no record of when they were
How to avoid overpaying
Ask what is included and why. Ask to see the old plugs and coils. Ask whether the shop scanned the car first. A quote that lists "tune-up" with no detail is a quote you cannot compare. We give written estimates that list every part and labor operation, and estimates are free. Whether you drive a GTI, a C300, a 3 Series or an F-150, you should know exactly what you are paying for before the work starts.
